Improving Care for the Substance-Exposed Dyad

The LaPQC addressed the need to improve the identification, care, and treatment of women who give birth and newborns affected by opioids and substance use through the Improving Care for the Substance-Exposed Dyad (ICSED) Initiative.

Launched in September 2021, ICSED emerged not only from key learnings from the LaPQC’s NOWS Pilot, but also from findings from the Louisiana Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Review Report identifying substance use as one of the leading causes of pregnancy-associated, but not related, deaths among people who give birth in Louisiana.

11 birthing facilities from 5 of Louisiana’s 9 regions participated in ICSED. About 20% of births were touched by these 11 birthing facilities. Together, teams worked to improve the identification, care, and treatment of the dyad affected by substance use/misuse, including opioids. Supports pediatric practices in screening and establishing referral pathways for caregivers impacted by postpartum depression.

Supports freestanding birth centers and community birth providers with readiness and response to maternal and neonatal emergencies.
