Reducing Maternal Morbidity Initiative

The LaPQC launched the Reducing Maternal Morbidity Initiative (RMMI), to address preventable maternal mortality and morbidity related to hemorrhage and hypertension, while also focusing on reducing racial disparities in these maternal outcomes.

Specifically, the RMMI sought to 1) reduce Severe Maternal Morbidity (SMM) by 20% among those persons who experience hemorrhage and/or severe hypertension by May 2020; and 2) decrease the Black-white disparity in SMM among hemorrhage and hypertension in the same time period.

Teams from participating hospitals across Louisiana worked to implement evidence-based best practices related to the management of hemorrhage and hypertension, as well as health equity. Facility teams participated in Coaching Calls, Learning Sessions, welcomed the LaPQC planning team into facilities for the Listening Tour, tested countless changes using improvement science and Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles, and shared lessons learned with other hospitals in the Collaborative.

LaPQC NOWS Pilot Project

The Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS) Pilot project was developed as a result of Act No. 174 of the 2018 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature which charged the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) with creating a demonstration project to optimize outcomes associated with NOWS.

In response to this legislation, the Louisiana Perinatal Quality Collaborative, authorized by the Louisiana Commission on Perinatal Care and Prevention of Infant Mortality, worked with teams from 4 birthing facilities in the state to identify and test high-impact, evidence-based best practices to test implementation of clinical and family support practices. Funding support was provided by the state’s Title V Maternal and Child Health Block Grant through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – Perinatal Quality Collaborative Opioid Supplement award, and the Louisiana State Opioid Response (LaSOR) grant administered through the LDH Office of Behavioral Health.
